The main visual difference between Hard Enamel Pins and Soft Enamel Pins is the texture. While hard enamel has a smooth finish, soft enamel pins consist of dips and ridges.
Hard Enamel Pins
Using a brass-based material, we can create top quality die-struck hard enamel pins.
In this process, our enamel paste is hand-filled multiple times, baked at high temperatures, and polished flat to give it a look very similar to that of an old-fashioned cloisonné. These pins have a scratch-resistant surface and a finish that is smooth to the touch.
Hard enamel lapel pins tend to be used for a clean and professional look. Plating types are limited to gold, nickel, black nickel, brass, and copper.
Soft Enamel Pins
For soft enamel lapel pins, we also use the die-struck process with our quality brass-based material. Enamel is filled once into recessed areas—making the metal ridges prominent.
Soft enamel lapel pins are our most popular pin type! Many use this type of pin for events, artsy-crafty projects, and as promotional items. Epoxy dome is a great option for that “faux hard enamel look” and to help with scratch resistance. All our metal plating types—for example, antiqued and painted nickel—are compatible with this process.
For both pin types, we are able to use the same mold. Because the enamel is processed differently, hard enamel tends to have a slightly longer turnaround time in manufacturing. We offer a variety of plating, backing, and packaging options.
